Mental skills coaching is not for everyone. If you're a casual, weekend player just out to enjoy the outdoors or the company of friends, it may not be for you.   • You are motivated more toward internal satisfaction than outward gain.

  • You hate to lose but understand being bested.
  • You do not make excuses for yourself.

Mental Challenges of Sport
  • You feel self-conscious and play less skillfully when others are watching you.
  • You perform better during practice than you do during competitive events.
  • You feel nervous or anxious prior to competing or executing a difficult maneuver.
  • You dwell on past mistakes, reliving over and over what you did wrong.
  • You hold yourself to impossible standards of performance or improvement.
  • You worry that you will injure or reinjure yourself during play.
  • You get carried away by negative emotions and lose the ability to focus.
  • You are easily distracted by noise, crowds, adverse weather, or pain.
  • You tend to equate your value as a person with your athletic ability.
